Roots series Illustrations created by Rotterdam-based illustrator Erwin Kho. Illustration commissioned by CBK Rotterdam and TENT for the exhibition ‘Far from Fong’ in Het Gemaal op Zuid, Rotterdam. The final piece measured 2 mtrs wide by 2.5 mtrs tall and was printed as a vinyl wallpaper.

The image depicts the trials and tribulations of a lonely sea drifting iguana and his avian companion. A storm launches them from their home island into the open ocean and through the currents they end up influencing life and eventually the course of evolution itself on distant islands.

La luz de las ciudades podría revelar vida extraterrestre:

A lo largo de estos años, en su afán de hallar inteligencia extraterrestre , los astrónomos han empleado la búsqueda de señales de radio, pulsaciones láser, etc. Sin embargo, en un nuevo artículo publicado por Avi Loeb (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics) y Edwin Turner (Princeton University) sugieren un nuevo método: examinar la luz de sus ciudades.

Si una civilización extraterrestre construyese ciudades con mucha luz, las futuras generaciones de telescopios nos permitirían detectarlos. Esto ofrece un nuevo método de búsqueda de inteligencia extraterrestre en otras partes de nuestra galaxia.

“La búsqueda de ciudades exóticas sería una apuesta arriesgada, pero tiene la ventaja de no requerir recursos adicionales. Y si tenemos éxito, cambiaría nuestra percepción de nuestro luegar en el Universo”, afirma Loeb.

Al igual que con otros métodos SETI (Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence ó Búsqueda de Inteligencia Extraterrestre), esta nueva propuesta se basa en la suposición de que estas formas de vida extraterrestre utilizan tecnologías similares a la Tierra. Aunque en este caso es razonable, ya que cualquier vida inteligente que se desarrollara en la cercanía de una estrella, probablemente utilizaría iluminación artificial durante las horas de oscuridad.

¿Cómo de fácil sería detectar una ciudad en un planeta lejano? Claramente, esta luz tiene que poder distinguirse de la luz de su estrella madre. Loeb y Turner sugirieron mirar el cambio en la luz de un exoplaneta (planeta que orbita una estrella diferente al Sol) que se mueve alrededor de su estrella.

A medida que el planeta orbita, éste pasa por fases similares a las de la Luna. Si estamos en una fase oscura y si observáramos desde la Tierra, la luz artificial proveniente del lado de la noche tendría mayor visibilidad que la reflejada desde el lado diurno. Así, el flujo total de un planeta con iluminación artificial puede variar de una manera sensiblemente diferente a la de un planeta sin ella.

Detectar esta pequeña variación a grandes distancias requiere nuevas generaciones de telescopios. Sin embargo, esta técnica podría ser probada en planetas situados al borde de nuestro sistema solar.

Loeb y Turner han calculado que los mejores telescopios de hoy en día deberían ser capaces de detectar la luz generada por una metrópoli del tamaño de Tokio a la distancia del cinturón de Kuiper, la región ocupada por Plutón, Eris y diferentes cuerpos de cometa que orbitan el Sol a una distancia entre 30 y 100 ua (unidad astronómica)
